Let’s talk mental health…
We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The Covid19 situation affected most of the population over the past year and certainty the life circumstances affected the mental health of many.
How are the business coping with the fact that workers experience more mental health issues than in previous years?
Not that great, research shows. A poll that questioned 2000 workers by Mental Health First Aid England has exposed that 25% of them haven’t received any mental health check-in since last March. Only around 32% of workers stated that the mental health support improved during the pandemic with the rest saying the mental health support stayed the same, worsened or there is no support at all.
The companies need to realize that wellbeing and mental health need to be embodied in the business strategy now more than ever. It is the long-term wellbeing strategies that can help the affected individuals after the gruesome year we experienced. It is said that the lockdowns will have a long implication on mental health and that it will take time for employees to get over the past life restrictions. It is recommended that the companies increase the regular well-being check-ins with the workers with increase the support. Businesses need to make sure that the managers are trained to handle such topic and help the ones in need. As well, there should be clear communication channels where employees can ask for help.
No matter where you work or what you do, you should ask yourself: “Does my company care about my mental health during or after the pandemic?” and “What can be changed within the business to improve the support and awareness?” Although the companies have been successfully improving their wellbeing strategies over the past years, there is still a long way to go.
